In todays post I want to discuss some different trends going around and what I think has staying power and what doesn't. I want to preface that I love everyone feeling happy and confident in what they wear, this post is exclusively my own opinions and what I want to wear myself, don't listen to me I'm just another girl online 😉.
Okay lets start with y2k, y2k has been trending for a few years now but since 2020 it has evolved quite a bit. For example, instead of bedazzled crop tops we have jorts and acid-washed low waist jeans. Reference images below.
I feel like a form of y2k has always be trending and although the current strain of baggy is fun I don't think it will last very long. I think these more baggy silhouettes may be very fun to experiment with but personally I won't be investing in this trend because the more extreme the silhouette, the shorter the trend will last (in my opinion) and I am trying to build a longevous wardrobe with low funds so I will be sticking to straight leg silhouettes as I find it hard to imagine that going out of style.
Now onto the dark feminine aesthetic and the pieces associated with it.
So because of this aesthetic many new trends have emerged. Firstly lets say red, red is everywhere. Everyone has red nails, red handbags, red rosary beads, red EVERYTHING. And I have to be honest I have succumbed to this trend, I have fallen in love with red as the perfect colour accessory that is cool in itself regardless of context.
As well as red being a big colour, black has never been more in. But less in terms of accessories and more in terms of auras. Smokey eyes, winged eyeliner, dark outfit choices and dark hair have been very big, it is like people want to look less cheery and more mysterious. I think this look is very sexy, with a lot of lace pieces and clean silhouettes, and I find it very funny when even still people are wearing all black outfits in summer (me included).
I believe that experimenting with more dark tones and elegant cuts are of course permanent, as I understand that none of these things are new but are instead more accessible to people with social media, allowing more people to be inspired and get involved in the trend.
Lastly onto mermaid core. I will start by saying I am not very well versed on this trend as a lot of the common pieces are out of my general aesthetic and I haven't looked very far into it, so we can explore together.
This aesthetic contains a lot of blues and other light colours with flowy silhouettes and often pearlescent makeup. I don't think the extremes of this aesthetic are very common in real life but I think some elements can be applied more practically like sea shell accessories, blue eyeshadow or even just a flowy skirt.
I think this is just such a beautiful aesthetic and it makes everyone involved look so ethereal. I don't think this trend has much longevity when discussing the full mermaid looks people have been going for but I think small aspects like dewy makeup or the wet hair look have and always will be trendy.
My overall point on all trends is that the further you go from the standard the more "trendy" you are being, but I also believe there is nothing wrong with being trendy or wearing outfits that will look "dated" in a few years. Everyone just wear what is fun and what you would feel the most comfortable in, you look amazing!
